Barkley wearing the 49ers number seven jersey

This week I saw quarterback Matt Barkley wear the San Francisco 49ers number seven jersey on Thursday, Colin Kaepernick is still unemployed and White supremacist rally in Charlottesville, Virginia.

The Thursday night NFL pre-season game between the San Francisco 49ers and Kansas City Chiefs had a surprising moment for me. San Francisco Matt Barkley was wearing the number seven jersey. A white athlete who seems to either have no idea or doesn’t care why many African-American bought the number seven jersey last season?

This is the first opportunity for Barkley to wear number seven since he left USC in 2012. He has been on an NFL roster since 2013 and has worn three different numbers. He wore number 2 with the Philadelphia Eagles, 9 with the Arizona Cardinals and 12 last season with the Chicago Bears. Barkley has a right to wear number seven since it is free and not retired. It is disappointing that no established African-American player told him to change number.

Barkley has only played in eleven games in his three years in the NFL. He has a 1 – 5 record as a starter. He is not expected to battle for the number one spot. He at least has a contract and is fighting for a roster spot. Kaepernick will have to wait for injuries to get a chance.

Saturday a White supremacist group held a rally in Charlottesville, Virginia and it turned violent. A White supremacist drove their car into an anti-protest group with three people killed and 19 injured as a result. This event reminds everybody why more African-American athletes must follow Kaepernick’s lead and protest the National anthem.

African-American professional athletes are important in the modern-day civil rights. They were in the sixties and early seventies, but have avoided the topic as they started receiving million dollars endorsement deals. They have no choice and must step up once again.

The 49ers should have told Barkley the number seven was unavailable?

Have a fabulous weekend!

    Hotep Gambit,

Yet another reason why I will continue to not watch the NFL anymore. On top of the match fixing genre of corruption which has been pervasive for a long time, it is increasingly evident that the NFL is infested with anti-Black racism.

I’ve been a hardcore Raiders fan since 1989, so I was super happy to see Marshawn Lynch sit during the amerikkkan national anthem. In fact, he was sitting down chilling and eating a banana while everyone else was standing at attention. I love it!! He is one of the few real men in the NFL. Because of him, I may actually watch an NFL regular season game for the 1st time in 10 years.

Several NBA coaches GM’s and owners have said that Colin Kap’s protest would have been welcomed by NBA owners. Mark Cuban said that himself!! Guys like Popovich and Steve Kerr are just as vocal in their support for the Black community as many of the Black players. I can watch the NBA and not feel conflicted or feel animosity toward the league. Its simply not the same with the NFL. That’s just a good ole boys club.

You gotta post about the legendary Usain Bolt. Extremely unlikely his records will ever ever be touched… Absolutely the most dominant athlete ever.

    Umoja,

    Kombozi.

Thank you for the comment Kombozi,
NBA have many African-American coaches and players have talk about social issues. NBA has young owners like Cuban while NFL every owner is over 70 and 99% White. Jacksonville Jaguars owner last name is Khan is only non white. The Williams sister own 10% of the Miami Dolphins.
I have to watch NFL because I make money from results.
