The Suns went from tanking to playoffs

The Phoenix Suns were on the list of teams that were going to tank the 2013 – 14 season in order to get a high draft pick. The Suns were 25 – 57 the previous season. They traded or cut all veterans on the squad from two years ago. Michael Beasley was bought out. The Suns traded Luis Scola, Marcin Gortat and Jared Dudley. Jermaine O’Neal was not resigned.

The Suns hired a rookie head coach, Jeff Hornacek. The coach of the year honour will be between him and coach Popovich.

The Suns roster is filled with in experienced and young players who haven’t yet established a reputation for themselves in the NBA. Goran Dragic (5), Eric Bledsoe (3), Miles Plumlee (1), Gerald Green (8), P.J. Tucker (7), Channing Frye (8), Ish Smith (3), Alex len Len (R), twins Marcus and Markieff Morris (2).

Goran Dragic who has shared his minutes with different point guards during his time in the NBA may be the Most Improved Player this season with 20.6 points, 6 assists and 3.2 rebounds.

A team that has Green on the roster would have to be considered a tanking team. He has won an All- star Slam Dunk competition and not much else during his NBA career. He only played more than 60 games and scored more than double digit points twice in his previous seven years. He has averaged 15.4 points a game.

Miles Plumlee is having an excellent year after sitting on the Indiana Pacers bench for 1 year. He is averaging 8.3 points and 8 rebounds a game in only 25 minutes.

The Suns are at the other extreme of a tanking team having success by playing young and hungry player. The Suns are presently 44 – 29 and are seventh place in the Western Conference. They are only 1.5 games behind the Golden State Warriors who are 45 – 27 and are the sixth seed.

They kept on winning despite the loss of Bledsoe for 29 games. The supposedly weak roster was going to win less than 30 games according to the experts. The Suns were expected to fade and miss the playoffs by a few games instead they won 6 in a row and dropped the Dallas Mavericks out of a playoff spot for now.

A team can have success by having a roster with many inexperienced player who want to prove themselves.

The Suns 9 remaining games are tough with only 3 games coming against teams not in the playoffs. Their season may come down to April 12 at the Dallas Mavericks and home against the Memphis Grizzlies April 14.

Will the Suns make the playoffs?

Enjoy your weekend!
